GPI: Resources for Digitising Herbarium Specimens

Sarracenia leucophylla

This is one of the 8 to 11 species of the genus Sarracenia -common names are North American pitcher plant, cobra lily and marsh-pitcher- and they are all native to Northern America. Sarracenia leucophylla is listed on CITES Appendix II and its vulnerable status
is mostly due to the loss or degradation of wetland habitats, use of
herbicides and influence of invasive exotic species. This specimen of
Sarracenia leucophylla was collected by Chapman(1809-1899) in Florida and it is kept in the Herbarium of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

This site is maintained by the Global Plants Initiative team at RBG, Kew with the help of contributors from all over the world. For information and tips on using this site please read the GPI Resources Guidelines.

If you wish to view specimens digitised by this and other projects, visit JSTOR Plant Science.

This site was created by the Global Plants Initiative (GPI) team at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to support the digitisation of herbarium specimens. Here we aim to compile resources about collectors, identify their signatures and locate unusual or historical localities.

Double click in the box for the Look Up Plant Part option. The following plant parts appear in the left hand plant part box

  • Leaves
  • Stem(s)
  • Flowers/inflorescence
  • Fruit
  • Root
  • Flowers/inflorescence(with inflorescence axis)
  • Bulb

Click on a plant part that appears on your sheet so it is highlighted. You can select multiple part plants by holding down CTRL. Once you have selected all the required plant parts (they are highlighted in blue) click the single arrow button pointing to the right. The highlighted parts will then move to the Selected Plant Parts box.  If you have made a mistake you can highlight any plant part in the selected Plant Parts Box  and move it back to the left hand plant part box the same way, this time clicking the single arrow button pointing to the left.

Plant parts not in the Look UP list can be added by typing the required plant part in the Other box e.g. Pseudobulb.

Once you are happy with the plant parts selected, click on the OK button. The selected plant parts will then appear in the plant part box in the general tab.

"me". Usually given instead of an author
citation on a name/determination.

It generally means the collector of the specimen
can be cited as the author of the name in question, but not always.

From 'Nobis' meaning 'us'/'me'. Usually given instead of an author citation on a name/determination.

Similar to 'Mihi', it usually means the collector of the specimen can be cited as the author of the name in question, but not always.
